Towards an Electronic Corpus of Bamana: Tonal Marks
Bamana is one of the big languages of Africa. It has a growing written literature, it is being taught in Malian schools. There are prerequisites for a creation of an electronic corpus of Bamana. One of the serious problems to be resolved by those who dare doing this job will be a tonal notation. It is complicated because of numerous combinatory modifications of tones, of the use of tones for expressing grammatical meanings and distinguishing between different types of noun phrases. The author of the communication substantiates the necessity of tonal marking in the texts of the Bamana corpus, and advances a "light" way of the tonal notation which permits to have all relevant tonal oppositions to be indicated.
